Each tray is made fractionally different from the shape of your teeth today. Worn consistently, that difference applies light continuous pressure and the tooth moves through the bone. You change to the next tray on a set schedule, and the sequence is planned from the start so the finishing position is known before the first tray goes in.
Aligners handle crowding, spacing, mild to moderate bite problems and relapse after previous orthodontics very well. Severe skeletal discrepancies, significant rotations and some complex bite corrections are still better served by fixed braces. An honest assessment will tell you which group you are in — being sold aligners for a case that needs brackets wastes a year.
Aligners only work while they are in your mouth. They need to be worn for the great majority of the day, removed for meals and drinks other than water, and cleaned. Treatment that stalls almost always stalls for this reason rather than a clinical one.
Patients often ask for veneers to correct teeth that are the right colour but out of line. Moving them into position first frequently reduces the number of veneers needed — sometimes to none — and keeps more natural enamel. Where that applies to your case, it will be raised before a cosmetic plan is written.
